If you own a house and you use hot water, then you pay the utility company every single month for the energy to heat your water. After the month is over you usually have nothing much to show for your money---and you have to pay the utility company again next month and the month after---every month, basically forever. So, in a way you have already paid for a SWH system, by pretty much wasting the money you send off to the utility company each month with no equity value added to your home.

The way it works when you have a Solar Water Heating system is that for a major portion of the year the sun will provide all or part of the energy to heat your water. You don’t need to purchase energy from the utility company to heat your water. This in turn means you don’t need to send a check to the utility company every month---you can keep the money in your own pocket. Pretty soon the savings every month will have paid for the cost of the SWH system. From then on it is almost as if you have a printing press in your basement that prints money for you. The added equity value of your home increases the resale value.
